Maintenance day 2025!

Our thanks to the small band of volunteers who came to help with a bit of spring cleaning of the Church in Burrough Green and clearing and tidying of the graveyard. Lots more to do but every little helps. Great to see a friendly robin hopping between the gravestones and a nuthatch climbing a nearby tree. The planting of bulbs over the years means the grounds are looking particularly lovely throughout spring. The church continues to be open every day for visitors thanks to our team of volunteers who lock and unlock each day. The Easter flower arrangements were beautiful so thank you to those who gave their time and skills. Do come and enjoy the peace and quiet of the building or the beauty of the flowers and wildlife.

Applefest 2023

We enjoyed a great Applefest on Sunday 15 October 2023 - thank you to everyone who attended and especially to those who organised and helped on the day - we hope to repeat this in 2024!  Some pictures below:

Churchyard Wall

The churchyard wall collapsed earlier this year. The Diocese put us in contact with The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).

Joe Orsi, a volunteer from SPAB came in October 2022 and taught a group of local volunteers several techniques, including flint knapping, required to repair the wall with lime, flints, and bricks. Coping bricks and shoulder plinth bricks were made locally to replace broken bricks. A time capsule and Jubilee mug were put inside the wall. Inside the time capsule is a list of all participants including 3 children giving their ages, a 50p coin and the outer cover of The Times newspaper.
The project took 4 days. Different members of the group provided soup lunches and other refreshments. We were very lucky with the weather, the sun shone for us on all four days.

Several people including children from the village came to see the wall being repaired and Joe gave details of the different skills. He demonstrated flint knapping and taught one child how to do it commenting that the child has a natural talent!
We are immensely grateful to Joe Orsi and SPAB for their full support of this project. It is wonderful the have the wall repaired and participants will now be able use the skills learnt to carry out further repairs in their own settings. The whole team had great fun and there was much banter over the four days!

St Augustine’s Project

After many years of planning and fund raising  we were finally able to carry out significant work to provide a modernised facility meeting the needs of our community. We are particularly grateful and would like to acknowledge the grant that we have received form the Amey Community Fund (part of the Landfill Communities Fund) which has contributed towards the cost of this project. We would also like to acknowledge contributions made by the All Churches Trust and Headley Trust.

The work is now completed and includes a new phase 3 power supply to the church, under pew heating throughout, a new water supply, drainage, an accessible WC, refreshment and flower preparation  area and a hearing loop. It is hoped that the church will serve as a venue in which a large number of people with differing needs can gather for a variety of reasons. The school and playgroup in the village will be able to use the church as an additional learning environment as well as being able to stage additional music and other events. The elderly and disabled in the village may attend events without the need for transport and the community as a whole can come together at any time during the year, enhancing the community spirit for which the village already has a reputation. The church is open and freely accessible every day of the year.
